Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who practiced in Paris and elaborated a distinctive interpretation of Freud's work influenced by linguistics, phenomenology, and materialist philosophy. Notoriously difficult, his work has gradually become known to the American academic community. At the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis, we remain strongly committed to transmitting the clinical practice of Lacanian psychoanalysis. In order to do so, we draw upon expertise not only from clinicians, but from scholars in adjacent fields.
Founded in 1991 by a group of San Francisco Bay Area clinicians and scholars under the collective initiative of the San Francisco Society for Lacanian Studies, the School offers a comprehensive clinical training program in Lacanian psychoanalysis. The School also has a scholarship track for individuals wishing to study Lacanian theory intensively without becoming practicing analysts.
We recognize that psychoanalytic training is a long and arduous process, requiring deep personal questioning and passionate commitment. We invite anyone who is interested in learning more about Lacanian psychoanalysis to explore the possibilities for Lacanian training offered by the School.
